Frequently Asked Questions
Taurus .454 Casull for sale
Does Taurus make a 454 Casull?
Yes. Taurus makes .454 Casull revolvers including the Raging Bull, Raging Hunter, and Raging Judge. The Raging Bull holds five rounds of .454 Casull or .45 Colt. The Raging Hunter features an 8.38-inch ported barrel with a Picatinny rail. The Raging Judge also chambers .45 Colt and .410 bore shotshells.
What are the disadvantages of a 454 Casull?
.454 Casull generates substantial recoil that demands significant shooter control and practice. Ammunition costs more than .44 Magnum due to lower production volumes and higher powder and brass consumption. Revolvers chambered for it require careful handloading given the cartridge's extreme operating pressures, which can damage improperly built firearms.
What is the problem with the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull?
Some users report cylinder binding after firing, particularly with certain ammunition brands. Heat expansion combined with internal residue can cause parts to stick, requiring manual manipulation to free the cylinder. Cleaning and proper maintenance typically resolve the issue. Most variants function reliably with standard loads.
Does 454 Casull kick?
Yes, .454 Casull kicks hard. It's one of the most powerful production handgun cartridges, producing sharp, heavy recoil that requires a firm two-handed grip and practice. Heavier revolvers soften it somewhat. Full-power hunting loads are more punishing than reduced loads.
Can you shoot 44 Mag out of a 454 Casull?
No. .44 Mag and .454 Casull have different bullet diameters and are not interchangeable. .44 Mag bullets (.429") are smaller than .454 Casull (.454"), so they won't chamber safely or fire accurately. A .454 Casull revolver can fire .45 Colt, but not .44 Mag.
How much is a Taurus raging hunter worth?
Taurus Raging Hunter revolvers average around $808 new, with a 12-month average near $790 and used examples averaging $642. Individual listings typically fall around $752–$820. Eleven configurations are available across 21 retailers, with ten variants currently in stock.
Is the Taurus Raging Hunter a good revolver?
The Raging Hunter earns solid marks for accuracy, recoil management via ported barrels, and optics-ready Picatinny rails. Hunters and backwoods carriers favor it. At around $1,000, it remains competitive against similar offerings. Available in multiple calibers including .454 Casull, .44 Magnum, and .45 Colt.
Can you hunt deer with 454 Casull?
Yes, .454 Casull is effective for deer hunting. The 240gr and 265gr loads work well out to 200 yards. Bullet selection and shot placement are critical. Recoil is substantial, so practice beforehand. The Taurus Raging Hunter and Freedom Arms Model 83 are popular choices.
Which is more powerful, a 44 Magnum or a 454 Casull?
The .454 Casull is significantly more powerful. It generates roughly 1,900 ft-lbs of muzzle energy compared to the .44 Magnum's approximately 900 ft-lbs. The Casull also produces substantially more recoil and is favored for hunting large or dangerous game.
What is the best 454 Casull revolver?
"Best" depends on your needs. The Freedom Arms Model 83 is widely considered the most accurate and well-built option but costs over $2,000. The Ruger Super Redhawk offers durability at a mid-range price. The Taurus Raging Hunter provides good value around $900. Consider budget, barrel length, and intended use.
