Frequently Asked Questions
FN 509c for sale
What is the difference between FN 509 and 509C?
The 509C is the compact version, measuring 6.8 inches long versus the full-size 509's 7.4 inches. The 509C ships with a 12-round magazine and a 15-round extended magazine, weighs slightly less, and is better suited for concealed carry. Both are striker-fired 9mm pistols.
Is FN as reliable as Glock?
Both FN and Glock pistols are considered highly reliable by users and professionals. Either will function dependably for defensive use. Glock has a longer track record, but FN 509s perform comparably. Differences between them come down to ergonomics and trigger feel, not reliability.
What are common FN 509 problems?
Reported issues include trigger stiffness, slide stop malfunctions, failure to feed, magazine release problems, accuracy inconsistencies, and striker breakage from repeated dry firing. Most problems surface early. Cleaning and lubrication before first use, plus a second range trip with different ammunition, often resolve malfunctions. Persistent issues warrant factory service.
How much is a new FN 509C?
New FN 509C pistols typically cost around $629, with most listings ranging from $525 to $932 depending on the variant and retailer. The manufacturer's MSRP is $639.
Does the FN 509C have a safety?
Yes. The FN 509C has four safeties: a trigger safety lever, striker block, drop safety, and trigger disconnect. Only the trigger safety requires manual actuation—it disengages automatically when you press the trigger. The others are passive and prevent accidental discharge without user input.
What does MRD mean for FN?
MRD stands for micro red dot. FN uses this designation for optics-ready pistols with direct-mount slides compatible with miniature red dot sights. The FN 509 MRD and FN Reflex MRD carry this designation, allowing shooters to mount compact optics directly without adapter plates.
Does the FN 509 come with a threaded barrel?
Standard FN 509 Compact models come with a non-threaded 3.7-inch barrel. The FN 509 Compact Tactical variant features a 4.3-inch threaded barrel with ½×28 threads, compatible with suppressors and compensators. Confirm which variant you are considering before purchasing.
Is the FN 509C optic ready?
Yes, the FN 509 Compact MRD is optics-ready. It features FN's Low-Profile Optics Mounting System, accepting most miniature red dot sights without adapters. Blackout iron sights co-witness with mounted optics. The marketplace lists 13 variants typically priced around $629.
What holster will fit a FN 509?
Multiple manufacturers make holsters specifically molded for the FN 509. Brands like Safariland, Blackhawk, and Alien Gear offer IWB and OWB options. Ensure your holster matches your exact 509 variant—Compact, Tactical, or LS Edge—since dimensions differ. Avoid FNX or FNS holsters; they won't fit.
How much is the FN 509 CC?
The FN 509 CC Edge has an MSRP of $1,294.00, with retail prices ranging from approximately $1,112.99 to $1,399.99. Thirteen variants are available across multiple retailers. Prices vary by dealer and whether you choose the standard Compact, Tactical, or Edge version.
Is the FN 509 good for concealed carry?
Yes. The FN 509 Compact is purpose-built for concealed carry with a 4-inch barrel, compact frame, and 15-round capacity. Its striker-fired action is reliable, and at roughly $629 it competes well against established carry pistols. The ergonomics and slim profile work with most body types and holster setups.
What are the common problems with the FN 509 compact?
Reported issues include failure to feed, failure to eject, and slide lock malfunctions, particularly in early rounds. Some users noted trigger stiffness and striker durability concerns with dry firing. Many problems resolved after cleaning and proper lubrication. Ammunition quality and break-in period may factor into reliability.
