Frequently Asked Questions
Springfield 1911 Stainless for sale
How much is a 1911 pistol from Springfield?
Springfield Armory 1911 pistols range from around $1,025.99 to at least $1,709.99, with models including the Garrison, Ronin, Operator, and TRP, available in 9mm, .45 ACP, and 10mm. Price varies by model, finish, and features.
Is a Springfield 1911 a good gun?
Springfield Armory 1911s are generally reliable and accurate. Entry-level models offer solid value, while premium versions like the TRP have strong track records. Quality varies by model, but most shooters consider them a dependable choice for range use, competition, or carry.
What's the best Springfield 1911?
"Best" depends on your use: Garrison for overall value, TRP for competition, DS Prodigy for modern features. Median price runs $964, with options from $771 to $1,502.
What is the lifespan of a 1911?
A quality 1911 will fire well over 100,000 rounds before needing major work. With proper maintenance—cleaning, spring replacement, and occasional part service—the frame and slide last decades or longer. Many shooters pass their guns to the next generation without issue.
What is the best ammo for a 1911?
Most 1911s run reliably on factory-loaded, brass-cased 230-grain FMJ ball ammo—what the gun was designed for. For defense, quality hollow-points like Hornady Critical Defense work well. Start with mil-spec hardball to test function, then experiment with other loads once you confirm reliability.
What makes the Springfield 1911 .45 special?
Springfield's 1911 line pairs classic design with modern manufacturing. Models range from the budget Mil-Spec with a forged frame to the premium TRP. Calibers include .45 ACP, 9mm, and 10mm across full-size, compact, and subcompact frames for defense, range, and competition use.
When was the Springfield 1911 A1 made?
The original U.S. government Springfield Armory produced 1911s from 1914 onward. The modern commercial Springfield Armory, founded in 1974, was producing 1911-A1 models by at least 1988. For your specific pistol's manufacture date, contact Springfield Armory directly with your serial number.
What is the difference between a 1911 and 1911a1?
Original 1911s had a longer trigger, shorter grip safety spur, flat mainspring housing, and smaller front sight. The 1911A1 introduced a shorter trigger, extended grip safety spur, arched mainspring housing, and taller front sight. These changes improved ergonomics and combat usability based on WWI feedback.
