Frequently Asked Questions
Sig Sauer P220 for sale
Is the Sig Sauer P220 discontinued?
Sig Sauer discontinued most P220 variants, but Legion models remain in production. Standard DA/SA and other non-Legion versions are no longer manufactured.
Is P220 good for concealed carry?
The P220 can work for concealed carry, but its full-size frame and weight—around 30 ounces unloaded—make it harder to conceal than compact alternatives. With a quality belt and holster it's manageable, though most people find smaller .45s like the P245 or Glock 30 more practical for daily carry.
Is the Sig P220 reliable?
Yes. The P220 has a strong reliability record built over decades of military, law enforcement, and civilian use. Most users report very few malfunctions with factory ammunition. The design has changed little since its 1975 introduction, which itself reflects confidence in its dependability.
What is the difference between Sig Sauer P220 and P220 Legion?
The P220 Legion features an enhanced trigger with overtravel adjustment, custom G10 grips, a short reset trigger, and an optional SAO action alongside the standard DA/SA. It also has improved ergonomics and a higher-grade finish. Standard P220s offer fewer configurations. The Legion is available in .45 ACP and 10mm Auto, commanding a significant price premium.
Where is the Sig P220 Legion manufactured?
Sig Sauer manufactures the P220 Legion at their facility in Exeter, New Hampshire. Earlier standard P220 models were produced in West Germany at Sauer & Sohn's Eckernförde plant before production shifted to the US in the 1990s.
How much is the Sig Sauer P220 Legion 10mm?
Sig Sauer P220 Legion 10mm pistols typically cost around $1,300 new, with current prices ranging from $1,449 to $1,599.99. Used examples average around $986.65. Availability varies by retailer, so checking multiple sources is recommended for the best current pricing.
What's the best ammo for a Sig P220 10mm?
For 10mm in a P220, Speer Gold Dot 200-grain JHP offers reliable expansion for defense. Hornady Critical Duty 175-grain FlexLock is another strong defensive choice. For practice, Sig Sauer Elite 180-grain FMJ costs less. Match your ammo to intended use—carry or range work.
How much is the P220 10mm?
Sig Sauer P220 10mm pistols average around $1,512 new and $1,186 used, with new listings reaching up to $1,779.99 depending on variant and condition. Legion models command higher prices. Check multiple retailers for current availability and best pricing.
How much is a Sig P220 Elite?
Sig Sauer P220 Elite pistols average $1,088.32 new, with prices ranging from $999.99 to $1,629.00 depending on caliber (.45 ACP or 10mm), action type (DA/SA or SAO), and condition.
What is the Sig Sauer P220 Elite?
Sig Sauer P220 Elite is a classic full-size pistol chambered in .45 ACP or 10mm, available in DA/SA or SAO actions. Built for defense and range use, it features a stainless steel slide and alloy frame.
What magazines are compatible with SIG Sauer P220?
P220 magazines hold 8 rounds in .45 ACP. SIG Sauer OEM magazines are the standard option. Aftermarket magazines from Mec-Gar and ProMag are also compatible. The P220 also came in 9mm and .38 Super variants, which require caliber-specific magazines.
Is the Sig Sauer P220 drop safe?
Yes, the P220 is generally drop safe, but with a critical caveat: pre-1994 models do not engage the drop safety when the hammer is manually thumbed down, meaning a drop onto the hammer could cause a discharge. Post-1994 models address this. Always verify your specific pistol's production date.
Does the Sig P220 come in 9mm?
No. The P220 has been produced in 9mm Para in addition to .45 ACP and 10mm. A complete 9mm P220 slide, barrel, and recoil spring were offered, and the 9mm P220 barrel is identical to the P226 9mm barrel. For more 9mm options, consider the P226 or P229.
How many rounds does a Sig P220 hold?
Standard P220 magazines hold 8 rounds in .45 ACP. Extended 10-round magazines are also available. The P220 is primarily chambered in .45 ACP, and capacity can vary slightly by model variant and magazine generation.
How accurate is the Sig P220?
The P220 is widely regarded as one of the most accurate SIG pistols. Its full-size frame reduces felt recoil, aiding follow-up shots, and the single-action trigger enables excellent practical accuracy well past 25 yards. Match-grade barrels and quality ammunition can tighten groups further.
