Frequently Asked Questions
FN Scar 17S NRCH for sale
Why is the FN SCAR 17 so expensive?
FN SCAR 17 rifles typically cost around $3,849, with most listings ranging $3,399–$4,099. The high price reflects substantial R&D investment, limited production scale compared to AR platforms, proprietary components requiring custom accessories, and FN's military contract heritage. Five variants are currently available across 34 retailers.
What does SCAR nrch stand for?
NRCH stands for Non-Reciprocating Charging Handle. It remains stationary while the bolt carrier cycles, so it won't interfere with your grip, shooting position, or optics. FN introduced this feature on newer SCAR models.
Can you shoot 308 out of SCAR 17S?
Yes, the SCAR 17S is chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO and will safely fire .308 Winchester. The two cartridges are nearly identical in dimensions, and FN designed the SCAR 17S with tolerances that accommodate both rounds.
What are the common problems with the FN SCAR 17S?
Common issues include rattling in the rear stock assembly, limited cheek weld positions, and folding stock pins shearing under use. Some users note excessive plastic components. Ammunition heavier than 168 grains may cause stability problems. Most are design quirks rather than reliability failures.
How much is a SCAR 308 worth?
FN SCAR rifles in .308 Winchester (7.62 NATO) typically sell for around $3,849. Most listings range from $3,299 to $3,999 or more depending on variant and retailer, with average new prices around $3,545 to $3,648. Multiple variants are available across numerous retailers.
Is 7.62 x51 the same as a 308?
Not quite. 7.62×51mm NATO and .308 Winchester have nearly identical dimensions but differ in chamber specs. While .308 Win may run slightly higher pressure, 7.62×51 has thicker brass, complicating direct comparison. Avoid shooting .308 in older 7.62×51 chambers due to dimensional differences. Use the cartridge your rifle is chambered for.
Is FN SCAR legal in CA?
Stock FN SCARs are not California-legal due to features like pistol grips combined with detachable magazines. Featureless configurations or fixed-magazine versions can make them compliant. CA-specific models are available through retailers. Consult a firearms dealer familiar with California law before purchasing.
Is the SCAR 17 discontinued?
FN America has discontinued all commercial SCAR models, including the SCAR 17 and SCAR 17S. Limited parts and repair support remain available, though no specific end date has been announced.
