Frequently Asked Questions
FN Scar 17S for sale
Why is the FN SCAR 17 so expensive?
The FN SCAR 17S typically sells for $3,100–$4,100. The high price reflects significant R&D costs, low civilian production volume compared to AR-15 platforms, proprietary components requiring FN-specific parts, and military-grade engineering standards. Limited supply relative to demand further sustains the premium.
Can a civilian buy an FN SCAR?
Yes, civilians can buy FN SCARs. FN halted new commercial production, but rifles remain actively available for purchase through retailers, auction sites like GunBroker, and FN's own channels. Prices typically range from $3,124 to $4,100. Availability may decrease over time as remaining stock sells.
How much is a SCAR 308 worth?
SCAR rifles in .308 (SCAR 17S and SCAR 20S models) typically sell for around $3,545 new and $3,110 used, with the 12-month average new price around $3,648. Prices vary based on condition, barrel length, and finish.
Does the FN SCAR come in 308?
Yes. FN offers the SCAR 17S and SCAR 20S in 7.62x51mm NATO (.308). The SCAR 17S is a combat rifle with a 16.25-inch barrel; the SCAR 20S is built for precision shooting with a longer barrel and enhanced accuracy features. Both use a gas-operated piston system.
What are the common problems with the FN SCAR 17S?
Common issues include rattling in the rear stock assembly, limited cheek weld positions, and shearing folding stock pins. Some users criticize excessive plastic components. Ammunition heavier than 168 grains may reduce accuracy. Reliability is generally solid, though inconsistent quality control has been reported by some owners.
What does SCAR nrch stand for?
NRCH stands for Non-Reciprocating Charging Handle. This dual-handle design lets shooters operate the rifle from either side without the handle moving rearward during firing, allowing flexibility across different shooting positions, grip styles, and optic setups.
Is FN coming out with a new SCAR?
Yes. FN is releasing three updated SCAR models in Q2 2026, alongside purpose-built FN QD762 and QD556 suppressors designed for the system. The new variants and details have already been disclosed.
What's the difference between a SCAR 17 and a SCAR 20?
The SCAR 20S is a precision marksman variant built on the SCAR 17 platform. The 20S features a longer 20-inch barrel, heavier match-grade profile, adjustable stock, and monolithic top rail optimized for optics. Unlike the 17S, which chambers only 7.62x51mm NATO, the 20S is also available in 6.5 Creedmoor.
