Frequently Asked Questions
Springfield Armory for sale
Why did Springfield Armory shut down?
The historic Springfield Armory in Massachusetts closed in 1968 due to federal budget cuts. Congress determined it was cheaper to purchase weapons from private contractors than to maintain the facility. The Springfield Armory brand was later licensed to a separate private company, which continues manufacturing firearms today.
Why don't people like Springfield Armory?
Some gun owners boycotted Springfield Armory after the company funded Illinois gun control legislation around 2017, hoping for dealer licensing exemptions. Springfield claimed ignorance and cut ties with the lobbyist, but many Second Amendment advocates felt betrayed and never returned to the brand.
Who makes Springfield Armory guns?
Springfield Armory is an Illinois-based manufacturer founded in 1974. The company makes handguns and rifles, and also imports certain pistol models manufactured by HS Produkt in Croatia.
What are common Springfield gun problems?
Springfield firearms occasionally experience extraction and ejection issues, particularly with EMP 9mm models. Some users report stiff slide action and plunger assembly problems out of the box. Quality control inconsistencies and slow customer service have frustrated some owners. Most issues resolve through gunsmith adjustment or factory warranty service.
Which is better, Smith and Wesson or Springfield Armory?
Both brands make reliable, accurate firearms. Smith & Wesson M&P series is generally praised for its trigger; Springfield XD series is known for ergonomics. The better choice depends on your hand size, grip preference, and budget. Handle both before buying.
