Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger 308 Bolt Action for sale
Is a Ruger American 308 a good gun?
Ruger American 308s are solid hunting and range rifles with reliable bolt actions and hammer-forged barrels. Some users report inconsistent magazine feeding. Priced around $600, they offer good value for the money.
What are the common problems with Ruger 308?
Ruger .308 rifles have several known issues. The SFAR has a defect investigation involving cracked extractors and stuck-case failures before 500 rounds. The American rifle's bolt handle moves up easily, causing the bolt to fall open and extract cartridges unintentionally. The Precision Rifle has a safety bulletin regarding interference between the aluminum bolt shroud and cocking piece.
What magazine does Ruger American 308 use?
The Ruger American in .308 Winchester uses a 4-round detachable polymer magazine. It is compatible with other short-action calibers including 6.5 Creedmoor, .243 Win., 6mm Creedmoor, and 7mm-08 Rem.
What is the effective range of a Ruger 308?
The .308 Winchester cartridge is generally effective to 800–1,000 yards for target shooting, though practical hunting range on deer-sized game is typically 300–500 yards. Ruger rifles chambered in .308 with 22-inch barrels can support accuracy throughout this range with quality ammunition and a skilled shooter.
Does Ruger American Gen 2 come in 308?
Yes, the Ruger American Rifle Gen 2 is available in .308 Winchester. It features a 20-inch barrel and a 3-round magazine. Pricing generally ranges from around $400 to $650, though it varies by retailer and configuration.
What ammo shoots best out of Ruger American Gen 2 308?
Best ammo varies by individual rifle. Try Federal Power-Shok, Remington Core-Lokt, Winchester Super-X, and Hornady American Whitetail in 150–165 grain weights. Shoot three-shot groups from a steady rest to find what your rifle prefers. Hornady Lite has also shown tight groups in testing.
How much is the Ruger 308 Scout?
Ruger Scout rifles in .308 Winchester typically retail between $600 and $1,100. The American Rifle Scout sits near the lower end around $600, while the Gunsite Scout model generally runs $900–$1,100. Prices vary by retailer and configuration.
What is the threaded barrel on a Ruger American 308?
The Ruger American in .308 Winchester uses a 5/8-24 threaded barrel, which is the standard thread pitch for .308 caliber suppressors and muzzle devices.
