Frequently Asked Questions
FN Five Seven for sale
Can you legally own a FN Five-seveN?
Legality varies by jurisdiction. Federal law permits civilian ownership of the FN Five-seveN pistol. Some states and cities restrict or ban it. California allows compliant 10-round models. Check your local and state laws before purchasing.
Why is 5/7 ammo so expensive?
5.7x28mm ammunition is expensive because it's produced in lower volumes than mainstream calibers like 9mm, limiting economies of scale. Fewer manufacturers compete in this niche market, keeping prices high. The specialized manufacturing process adds further cost compared to common defensive rounds.
What is the price of a FN 5 Seven?
FN Five-seveN pistols typically sell around $976 on our marketplace, with most listings between $987 and $1,436. Manufacturer MSRP is $1,509.
What are the disadvantages of a 5.7 pistol?
Five-seveN pistols are large and heavy for their caliber, making concealed carry challenging. Ammunition costs significantly more than 9mm—often exceeding $0.70 per round. Limited manufacturer options restrict ammo availability. Terminal performance lags behind 9mm despite higher velocity. Fewer holsters and accessories exist compared to mainstream calibers.
What ammo does a FN 5:7 use?
The FN Five-seveN uses 5.7x28mm ammunition. The primary commercial load is FN's SS197SR with a 40-grain V-MAX bullet. Fiocchi and other manufacturers also produce 5.7x28mm rounds. The SS190 is a military and law enforcement round restricted from civilian sale.
Is 5.7 more powerful than 45 ACP?
No. The 5.7x28mm fires lighter, faster bullets (typically 40 grains) but delivers less muzzle energy than .45 ACP's heavier projectiles. The .45 ACP transfers more energy on impact. The 5.7 offers advantages in magazine capacity, flat trajectory, and reduced recoil.
Is 5.7 ammo hard to find?
5.7x28mm ammunition is moderately available. Supply is smaller than common calibers like 9mm, but dedicated ammo sites stock it regularly. Expect to pay more than mainstream rounds due to lower production volume.
Does the FN Five-seveN have a threaded barrel?
Standard FN Five-seveN pistols ship with non-threaded barrels. Aftermarket threaded barrels, such as the EFK Firedragon 5.5" model, are available for suppressor use.
Why is the FN Five-seveN so expensive?
FN Five-seveN pistols cost more because they pioneered the 5.7x28mm cartridge, requiring significant development investment, and FN remains the original manufacturer of the platform. Belgian manufacturing, limited production volume, and strong government contract demand also contribute. Median prices run around $1,149, typically ranging from $987 to $1,436.
Does 5.7 kick harder than 9mm?
No, 5.7x28mm produces noticeably less recoil than 9mm—roughly 30 percent less. This makes fast, accurate follow-up shots easier. The tradeoff is nuanced: 9mm generally penetrates better than 5.7, while 5.7 offers higher magazine capacity and flatter shooting.
What is the difference between FN Five-seveN and MRD?
The Five-seveN MRD is the Mk3 generation, a fully revisited design built on end-user feedback to enhance ergonomics and usability. It adds an optics cut for mini red dots and an internal magazine safety, meaning it cannot fire without a magazine. Both fire 5.7x28mm, hold 10 or 20 rounds, with a median price around $1,149.
What is the difference between fn 5.7 mk1 and MK2?
The MK2 features a one-piece milled slide instead of the original's two-piece welded design, improving durability. It also adds adjustable sights and front slide serrations. Shooting performance is nearly identical between both versions. MK2 variants typically cost $100–$200 more than MK1 models.
Is 5.7 good for concealed carry?
5.7x28mm pistols work for concealed carry but have tradeoffs. They're thinner than most handguns but longer overall due to barrel length requirements. The round offers good accuracy and penetration, but full-sized models like the Five-seveN aren't as compact as dedicated carry guns, and shorter barrels sacrifice performance.
Is the FN 5.7 armor piercing?
The FN 5.7x28mm cartridge varies by load. Civilian rounds like the SS197 do not penetrate body armor. The SS190 armor-piercing round exists but FN restricts its sale to law enforcement and military only, keeping it off the civilian market.
Do FN 5.7 jam?
FN Five-seveN pistols are generally reliable. Most reported jams stem from ammunition issues—hollow points catching feed ramps or double feeds—rather than mechanical failures. Using factory FN ammunition minimizes problems. Like any firearm, occasional malfunctions happen, but the Five-seveN has a strong reliability reputation.
