Frequently Asked Questions
Colt Competition 1911 for sale
How accurate is the Colt competition 45?
The Colt Competition 1911 in .45 ACP typically groups 2–3 inches at 25 yards from a rest. Its tight barrel fit, two-pound trigger, and fiber optic sights contribute to above-average accuracy for a production pistol, making it competitive in USPSA and similar shooting sports without custom gunsmithing.
What is special about a Colt 1911 .38 Super?
The .38 Super cartridge fires a 9mm-diameter bullet at higher velocity than most pistol rounds, offering excellent accuracy and a flat trajectory. In 1911 form, it's popular in competitive shooting, particularly in IPSC/USPSA Open class, and holds cultural significance in Mexico where it's favored for its power.
Is the .38 Super cartridge still in production?
Yes, .38 Super ammunition remains in production, though the cartridge has slipped into obscurity over time. Fiocchi is one of the few manufacturers still producing factory loads, and Winchester continues making it as well. It retains a niche following in competitive shooting, particularly IPSC and USPSA.
What is the best 38 Super pistol?
"Best" depends on your use. The Colt Competition 1911 in .38 Super excels in competition shooting with tight tolerances and a refined trigger. TriStar's American Classic offers a budget alternative. Les Baer builds premium custom versions. Prices range roughly $900–$2,300 across available options.
Is it bad to dry fire a Colt 1911?
Dry-firing a 1911 is generally safe. The design handles it well, though snap caps add extra protection to the firing pin and sear. Avoid repeatedly dropping the slide on an empty chamber, as that can cause wear over time.
