Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger Security 9 for sale
Is Ruger Security-9 discontinued?
No, the Ruger Security-9 is not discontinued. It remains in active production and is widely available from retailers, typically priced around $320.
What are the common problems with the Ruger Security-9?
Most reported issues involve failure to extract or feed, often traced to ammunition quality, magazine problems, or limp-wristing. Rare factory defects include broken firing pins or slide stop failures. Excessive dry firing may stress internal components. Ruger's warranty covers manufacturing defects.
Is Ruger Security-9 drop safe?
The Ruger Security-9 lacks a firing pin block, and Ruger's own manual warns that the pistol may fire if dropped or struck. It is not unconditionally drop safe. Only fire it deliberately and handle it carefully to avoid accidental discharge from impact or dropping.
Is the Ruger Security 9 accurate?
Combat accuracy is solid for a compact defensive pistol. Most shooters report four-to-six-inch groups at typical defensive distances. It wasn't designed as a target gun, so precision benchrest performance shouldn't be expected. Ammunition quality and shooter technique significantly affect results.
What is the difference between Ruger Security-9 and 9 Compact?
The Security-9 Compact has a shorter barrel (3.42" vs 4.16"), slide, and grip frame, reducing overall size and capacity (10+1 vs 15+1 rounds). Both use the same 9mm caliber and Secure Action trigger. The Compact suits concealed carry; the full-size offers better control and a longer sight radius.
How does the Ruger Security 9 compare to Glock 19?
Both are compact 9mm striker-fired pistols suited for carry. The Security-9 costs around $320 versus the Glock 19's $500-plus. The Security-9 is notably slimmer at 1.02" wide compared to the Glock 19's 1.26", a meaningful difference for carry. Choose based on budget, ergonomics, and how much you value aftermarket options.
What is the Security-9's recoil like?
Recoil is mild and easy to manage. Ruger's 13-pound recoil spring softens the impulse, making follow-up shots quick and accurate. Most shooters handle it comfortably during extended range sessions, which suits its concealed carry purpose well.
What magazines fit Ruger Security-9?
Ruger makes 10-round and 17-round OEM magazines for the Security-9. Aftermarket options from ProMag also fit. Factory Ruger magazines are generally preferred for reliable feeding and slide lock. Note that compact and full-size Security-9 variants use different magazines, so confirm your model before purchasing.
What is the best ammo for Security-9?
For self-defense, Speer Gold Dot 124-grain +P or Federal Premium Personal Defense 147-grain hollow points perform well. For range practice, standard 9mm FMJ works fine. The Security-9 feeds reliably across most quality ammunition, so choose based on intended use and budget.
How many rounds does a Ruger Security-9 hold?
The full-size Ruger Security-9 holds 15 rounds in its standard magazine, and the pistol ships with two 15-round magazines. The compact version holds 10 rounds. Additional Ruger magazines are available for purchase on our marketplace.
Why does my Ruger Security 9 keep jamming?
Failure to eject typically points to extractor issues, fouling, or magazine problems. Clean the extractor thoroughly and inspect magazine springs for wear. Test different ammunition brands, as some Security-9s are picky. If jamming persists after cleaning and trying fresh mags, contact Ruger's warranty service for inspection.
Can you dry fire a Ruger Security-9?
Yes, Ruger confirms the Security-9 can be dry-fired without damaging the firing pin or internal components. For extensive practice, snap caps are recommended to reduce wear over time.
What is the difference between the Security-9 and the Security-9 pro?
Security-9 Pro models omit the external manual thumb safety found on standard Security-9s. Pro versions ship with factory-installed tritium night sights and three magazines versus two on the standard model. Both share the same compact 9mm platform and core features.
Can you conceal carry a Ruger Security 9?
Yes, the Security-9 can be concealed carried. Its slim profile, lightweight build, and compact frame make it manageable for everyday carry. Ruger markets it partly for this purpose. A quality holster suited to your body type will help ensure comfortable, secure concealment.
What are the pros and cons of the Ruger Security-9?
Pros: reliable, affordable (around $320), compact, good ergonomics, strong warranty. Cons: external safety requires training, limited aftermarket support compared to larger Ruger models. The Security-9 holds 15+1 rounds, making capacity a clear strength rather than a drawback.
