Frequently Asked Questions
Mossberg 590A1 for sale
Is the Mossberg 590A1 any good?
Yes, the 590A1 is highly regarded. It's a military-spec pump-action 12-gauge known for reliability and durability in demanding conditions. Used for home defense, law enforcement, and hunting, it features robust construction and straightforward controls. Currently in production with 23 variants, typically priced around $736.
What is the difference between Mossberg 590 and 590A1?
The 590A1 upgrades the standard 590 with a heavier barrel, metal trigger group, and metal safety instead of polymer components, meeting military specifications. Standard 590s use more polymer parts and cost less. The A1 suits tactical or professional use; the base 590 works well for hunting and recreational shooting.
What makes the Mossberg 590A1 retrograde unique?
Retrograde models feature a walnut stock with checkered grip, vented recoil pad, and Parkerized finish echoing the original 590A1 design. They retain military-spec construction: thickened barrel, bayonet lug, and all-steel components. Typical retail price runs around $736.
Can you shoot slugs out of a Mossberg 590A1?
Yes, you can shoot slugs from a Mossberg 590A1. Use rifled slugs for best accuracy through the smoothbore barrel. Sabot slugs require a rifled barrel to stabilize properly and should be avoided. Test different brands and loads to find what your specific gun shoots most accurately.
Which bayonet fits the Mossberg 590A1?
The Ontario Knife Company M9 bayonet fits the Mossberg 590A1, and both Mossberg and Ontario recommend it for this shotgun. The M7 bayonet also fits, though some users report tolerance issues.
How does the 590A1 compare to the 500?
The 590A1 features a heavy-wall barrel, metal trigger housing, metal safety, and bayonet lug. The 500 uses plastic trigger housing and safety components. The 590 (non-A1) also has all-metal parts, while the 590A1 adds the heavy-wall barrel on top of that. Both are pump-action 12-gauges, with the 590A1 commanding the highest price.
Can civilians buy a Mossberg 590A1?
Yes, civilians can buy a Mossberg 590A1. No special licensing is required in most states.
Can you dry fire a Mossberg 590A1?
Mossberg does not recommend dry firing the 590A1, as the manufacturer warns it can cause the magazine tube spring to lose tension. Many users report no issues from occasional dry firing, but using snap caps is the safer choice to follow Mossberg's guidance and protect your firearm.
