camo is wearing down pretty fast and it's almost white in some spots

Frequently Asked Questions
Mossberg 500 for sale
Is a Mossberg 500 a good gun?
The Mossberg 500 is a reliable, affordable pump-action shotgun with over 100 variants. Priced around $467, it's widely used for hunting, sport shooting, and home defense. It's durable with solid ergonomics, making it a strong choice for most shooters.
What is the price of the Mossberg 500 20 gauge?
Mossberg 500 20 gauge shotguns average around $532.65 new and $246.64 used. Price varies by barrel length, stock type, and finish.
How far will a Mossberg 500 shoot?
Effective range depends on ammunition and choke. Buckshot patterns well to 40–50 yards; slugs can reach 75–100 yards accurately. Birdshot spreads quickly, limiting it to 20–35 yards. Your specific load and choke determine actual distance.
Can a Mossberg 500 slam fire?
A stock Mossberg 500 cannot slam fire. Its disconnector prevents the hammer from following the bolt unless the trigger is deliberately pulled. Modifying the trigger group to enable slam firing would require machining work and may constitute an illegal conversion under federal law.
How long does a Mossberg 500 last?
Mossberg 500s typically last a lifetime with proper maintenance. The pump-action design is durable, and users report tens of thousands of rounds without part failure. Cast aluminum receivers can develop cracks under extreme use, but this is rare for typical hunting or sport shooting.
What is the difference between the Mossberg 500 and 500A?
The 500A is simply Mossberg's 12-gauge designation within the 500 series. Mossberg uses letter suffixes to indicate gauge: 500A=12ga, 500B=16ga, 500C=20ga, 500E=.410. Functionally, a 500 and 500A are the same shotgun; differences between individual guns come from barrel length and optional features.
How many shells can a Mossberg 500A hold?
The Mossberg 500A capacity varies by model and barrel length. A common configuration holds 5 in the magazine plus 1 in the chamber, but other variants offer 7+1 or 8+1 capacities. Capacity also depends on whether you use 2¾" or 3" magnum shells.
What is the standard stock on a Mossberg 500?
Mossberg 500s typically ship with a wood or synthetic buttstock depending on the variant. Stock type varies across the over 106 available configurations, so there is no single universal standard stock.
What is the difference between the Mossberg 500 and the 500 tactical?
The Mossberg 500 Tactical features a shorter barrel, pistol grip stock, and accessories like rails or extended magazines optimized for defensive use. Standard 500 models have longer barrels and traditional stocks suited for hunting. Both use the same pump-action receiver and are available in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410.
Why does my Mossberg 500 only hold 3 rounds?
Your Mossberg 500 likely has a wooden dowel plug in the magazine tube limiting it to 2 shells in the magazine, giving 3 rounds total (2+1 in chamber), to comply with migratory bird hunting regulations. Standard 500s hold 5-6 rounds. Remove the barrel, point down, and shake to extract the plug when legal.
Can you change barrels on a Mossberg 500?
Yes. Mossberg 500 barrels swap in under a minute by unscrewing the magazine cap. Compatibility depends on your magazine tube length and barrel attachment type. Standard 500 barrels interchange freely, and swapping magazine tubes gives access to 590 and 835 barrels as well.
Is the Mossberg 500 turkey gun any good?
Yes. The Mossberg 500 is a reliable, durable pump-action that handles field conditions well. Users praise its smooth action, mild recoil with appropriate loads, and performance even when dirty. Available in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410 bore, it's a solid choice for turkey hunting at a reasonable price point.
Can I put a pistol grip on my Mossberg 500?
Yes, pistol grip stocks are available for the Mossberg 500. However, adding one makes the action release and safety harder to access and operate. Many shooters prefer standard stocks for faster, more intuitive handling in tactical or competitive use.
What are the differences between the Mossberg 500 and 590?
The 590 features a separate magazine cap with a sheet metal spring retainer and an open-ended tube, plus a metal trigger group, making it more durable for military and tactical use. The 500 uses a simpler magazine tube design. Both are pump-action shotguns sharing many interchangeable parts.
Does the Mossberg 500 and 590 use the same stock?
Yes, stocks are interchangeable between the 500 and 590. Both share the same receiver design, so stocks fit identically. Some aftermarket stocks may need minor fitting, but standard Mossberg stocks swap between the two without modification.
