Frequently Asked Questions
Mossberg 500 12 Gauge for sale
Is the Mossberg 500 12 gauge reliable?
The Mossberg 500 is widely considered one of the most reliable pump-action shotguns available. It meets military specifications, functions dependably with varied ammunition, and has a strong track record across hunting, defense, and sport shooting. It typically sells for around $460.
Can a Mossberg 500 slam fire?
Stock Mossberg 500s don't slam fire. The design requires internal modifications and machining to enable it. Such conversions demand specialized tools and knowledge, and legal status varies by jurisdiction, so check local laws before attempting any modifications.
How many rounds does a Mossberg 500 12 Gauge hold?
Standard Mossberg 500 models hold 5 shells in the magazine tube plus 1 in the chamber, for 6 rounds total. Some variants hold 6+1. Using 3" magnum shells reduces magazine capacity to 4. Capacity also varies by barrel length and configuration.
Can you hunt deer with a Mossberg 500?
Yes. The Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge works well for deer hunting. Use slugs through a rifled barrel for best accuracy, or buckshot at closer ranges through a smoothbore. Combo models include both barrel types. Check local regulations, as some areas restrict shotgun deer hunting to specific seasons or ammunition.
Can I put a pistol grip on my Mossberg 500?
Yes, pistol grips are available for the Mossberg 500. Aftermarket options like the Mossberg 95000 synthetic grip fit both 500 and 590 models. Note that a pistol grip can make the safety and action release harder to reach, which some shooters find inconvenient.
How much is a 500 Mossberg worth?
A Mossberg 500 shotgun averages $532.65 new and $246.64 used. The 12-month average runs $513.51 new and $248.89 used. Price varies by barrel length, finish, and configuration. Our marketplace listings reflect similar ranges across available models.
What is the best ammo for a Mossberg 500?
Best ammo depends on your purpose. For birds and clay targets, use birdshot in 1 to 1 1/8 ounce loads. For deer, use slugs through a rifled barrel or 00 buckshot at close range. For home defense, 00 buckshot is standard. Federal, Remington, and Winchester all make reliable 12 gauge loads.
Can I change the barrel on my Mossberg 500?
Yes, you can swap barrels on a Mossberg 500. Replacement barrels are widely available from Mossberg and aftermarket makers. When parts are compatible, the swap takes under a minute. Compatibility varies by model due to magazine tube differences, so verify your exact model number before purchasing to ensure proper fit.
