Frequently Asked Questions
Mossberg 500 20 Gauge pump action for sale
What is the price of the Mossberg 500 20 gauge?
Mossberg 500 20 gauge shotguns typically cost around $533 new. Most listings fall between $340 and $670 depending on barrel length, stock configuration, and included accessories.
Is the Mossberg 500 20 gauge any good?
The Mossberg 500 in 20 gauge is a reliable, well-regarded shotgun. Its reduced recoil compared to 12 gauge makes it easier to handle accurately. It performs well for hunting, home defense, and sport shooting. With 25 current variants and decades of production, it's a proven, durable choice.
How many shells does a Mossberg 500 20 gauge hold?
The standard Mossberg 500 20 gauge holds 5 shells in the magazine tube plus 1 in the chamber (5+1 total). With 3" shells, magazine capacity drops to 4, giving 4+1 total.
Can a Mossberg 20 gauge shoot slugs?
Yes, Mossberg 20 gauge shotguns can shoot slugs. Use rifled slugs in a smooth-bore barrel or sabot slugs in a rifled barrel for best accuracy. Always confirm your specific model's compatibility in the owner's manual before shooting slugs.
What is the best barrel length for a 20 gauge shotgun?
Barrel length depends on intended use. For dense cover hunting or home defense, 20-24 inches offers better maneuverability. For field hunting and sport shooting, 26-28 inches improves swing and sight picture. Muzzle velocity changes little between lengths, so prioritize fit and purpose over any marginal ballistic differences.
What is the 20-gauge Mossberg 500 youth model?
The Mossberg 500 Bantam (or Super Bantam) is a pump-action 20-gauge shotgun designed for smaller shooters. It features a stock 1 inch shorter than standard field models and an E-Z Reach forend. It holds five shells and suits hunting and sport shooting, priced roughly $340–$670 at major retailers.
What is the difference between the Mossberg 500 and the 500 tactical?
The 500 Tactical features a shorter barrel and pistol grip for compact handling and home defense, while the standard 500 comes in field configurations with longer barrels suited to hunting and sport shooting. Both share the same pump action and are available in multiple gauges. Tactical variants typically cost more.
Can you hunt deer with a Mossberg 500?
Yes. Mossberg 500 shotguns work well for deer hunting, especially models with rifled barrels and slugs. Many hunters use 12 gauge versions; the 20 gauge also functions for deer but delivers less energy. Combo kits pairing smoothbore and rifled barrels offer versatility. Check local regulations—some areas restrict shotgun gauges or require specific ammunition for deer season.
