What customers like
Reliable & durable38%
Load it, rack it and pull the trigger...BOOM. Rinse and repeat. Works every time.
Excellent value for price31%
Great shotgun, works flawlessly. The only issue is that it comes with a 2-part short butstock.
Low recoil, easy to shoot29%
I perchesed the 20 gauge instead of the 12 because of the lighter recoil.
Lightweight & maneuverable18%
Light weight and a lot less recoil than my 11-87.
Smooth action15%
Surprised how smoorh the action was.
Common concerns
Stiff/heavy trigger pull9%
Trigger does have alot of creep but it's a shotgun.
Loose/rattling forearm7%
the forearm is to lose. Rattles like crazy.
Finish quality issues6%
camo paint fades or rubs off quickly and leaves the gun looking almost white in spots.
Ammo picky/ejection issues5%
Would not eject 7/8oz 2.75" shells. Fired just fine, but 10 for 10 failed to eject.
Frequently Asked Questions
Mossberg 20 Gauge for sale
What is the price of the Mossberg 500 20-gauge?
Mossberg 500 20-gauge shotguns typically cost around $501 on our marketplace. Most listings fall between $264 and $851 depending on barrel length, stock configuration, and accessories.
Is a Mossberg 500 20 gauge a good gun?
The Mossberg 500 in 20 gauge is reliable, affordable, and well-built. It produces less recoil than 12-gauge versions, making it comfortable for smaller-framed shooters. It works well for hunting small game and home defense. Parts and accessories are widely available. It's one of the most trusted pump shotguns on the market.
Does Mossberg make a 20-gauge tactical shotgun?
Yes. Mossberg offers 20-gauge tactical shotguns, including the SA-20 Tactical. Their primary tactical line today is the 590 series, not the 500. These models feature shorter barrels and ghost ring sights suited for home defense.
Can a Mossberg 20 gauge shoot slugs?
Yes, Mossberg 20-gauge shotguns can shoot slugs. Rifled barrels offer better accuracy with sabot slugs, while smooth-bore barrels work with Foster-style slugs. Check your barrel type and choke setting before shooting slugs; Mossberg recommends Full Cylinder choke for smooth-bore use.
What choke tube for Mossberg 500 20 gauge?
Mossberg 500 20-gauge shotguns use Mossberg Accu-Choke tubes. Common choices: Full or Extra Full for turkey, Modified for waterfowl, Improved Cylinder for upland birds, and Cylinder for home defense. Aftermarket options from Carlson's and Patternmaster also fit. Confirm your barrel is choke-threaded before purchasing.
What is the best 20 gauge shotgun for home defense?
"Best" depends on your needs, but strong 20-gauge home defense options include the Mossberg 590S, Remington 870, and Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol — a tactical variant announced in 2023 and noted as an editor's pick for home defense. The Mossberg 500 runs around $400-500 and remains a reliable, accessible choice.
What is the best 20 gauge shotgun for a youth?
The Mossberg 500 Youth Bantam is a popular, affordable option with a shorter stock suited for smaller frames. For reduced recoil, consider the Franchi Affinity 3 or Winchester SX4 semi-automatics. Fit matters most—have the youth shoulder each gun before purchasing.
What is the best Mossberg shotgun for turkey hunting?
Mossberg's 500 Turkey with a 22-inch barrel is reliable and affordable around $500. For tighter patterns and faster follow-ups, consider the semi-auto 940 Pro Turkey. Ultimately, consistent ammunition and a Full or X-Full choke matter more than the specific model.
