Frequently Asked Questions
.40 S&W Pistols for sale
What is the best 40 S&W pistol?
"Best" depends on your needs. Popular choices include the HK USP for recoil management, Glock 23 Gen5 for reliability, and SIG P239 for compact carry. Try several before deciding which fits your hand and shooting style.
Why is .40 S&W unpopular?
Law enforcement agencies largely shifted to 9mm for better capacity, lower recoil, and comparable stopping power with modern ammunition. Shooters followed suit. The cartridge also costs more than 9mm, produces sharper recoil, and fewer manufacturers support it. Overall demand has declined significantly over the past two decades.
Do they still make 40 caliber pistols?
Yes. Major manufacturers like Glock, Smith & Wesson, and SIG Sauer still produce .40 caliber pistols. They remain widely available at gun retailers, though demand has declined compared to 9mm. Prices typically range from around $400 to over $1,000 depending on the model.
How much is a 40 cal S&W pistol?
A .40 S&W pistol typically costs around $596. Most listings fall between $248 and $1,338 depending on brand and model, with entry-level options near $250 and premium models exceeding $1,000.
Will a 40sw stop a bear?
.40 S&W can stop a black bear but is marginal for this purpose. Use premium 200-grain hard-cast or bonded bullets for maximum penetration. Multiple shots will likely be needed. For reliable bear defense, larger calibers like .41 or .44 Magnum are strongly preferred.
Does a .40 kick harder than a 9mm?
Yes, .40 S&W produces noticeably more recoil than 9mm. It generates higher pressure and greater felt kick, making follow-up shots slower for most shooters. Gun weight and design also affect perceived recoil.
Does Walmart sell 40 S&W bullets?
Yes, Walmart sells .40 S&W ammunition. Winchester USA WinClean .40 S&W rounds are available, priced around $17.84 per box of 50. Availability varies by location, so check your local store's inventory online or call ahead to confirm stock.
