Frequently Asked Questions
Colt .38 Super for sale
Is .38 Super more powerful than 9mm?
Yes, .38 Super is generally more powerful than 9mm. Factory loads typically run about 100 fps faster and deliver roughly 68 additional foot-pounds of energy. Both use the same bullet diameter, but the Super's greater case capacity gives it the edge in velocity and energy.
Is the .38 Super cartridge still in production?
Yes, .38 Super remains in production, though it has slipped into obscurity. Fiocchi is one of the few manufacturers still producing factory ammunition in the caliber, with Winchester also noted as a source. Colt and Springfield Armory still chamber pistols for it, and it sees use in USPSA competition.
What is the point of 38 Super?
.38 Super pushes bullets faster than 9mm from the same diameter, giving flatter trajectories and more energy. It's popular in competition shooting, particularly IPSC/USPSA, and appeals to shooters wanting more performance than 9mm in a single-stack pistol without stepping up to .45 ACP.
Is a .38 Super 1911 reliable?
Yes, .38 Super 1911s can be reliable, but the semi-rimmed cartridge means older or poorly tuned 1911s can be finicky about feeding — a caveat specific to this caliber, not just build quality. Quality ammunition and a well-tuned pistol matter greatly. Expect fewer ammo options and roughly double the cost of 9mm.
What is a Colt Gold Cup worth?
Colt Gold Cup pistols average $1,321.67 new, or $1,490.89 for the Trophy variant. Used examples average $1,091.10 (Gold Cup) or $857.22 (Trophy). New retail listings reach up to $1,635.99. Prices vary by caliber, condition, and specific model.
What ammo does a Colt 38 Super take?
Colt 38 Super pistols use .38 Super or .38 Super +P ammunition. Most modern factory loads are marked .38 Super +P. You can also fire .38 ACP in these pistols, as all three cartridges are compatible with the Colt 38 Super.
