Frequently Asked Questions
Winchester model 70 .300 Win Mag rifle for sale
What are the specs of the Winchester Model 70 300 Win Mag?
Winchester Model 70 in 300 Win Mag is a bolt-action rifle with capacity varying by variant: the Featherweight holds 5 rounds while the Extreme True Timber VSX holds 3. Weight also varies by variant, from 7.25 lbs to 8 lbs 8 oz. Six variants available, priced around $1,116.
Why are Model 70 so expensive?
Model 70 rifles range from $830 to $1,854 because Winchester uses controlled-round-feed actions, quality steel, and hand-fitted components that improve accuracy and reliability. Higher-grade models like the Super Grade add premium walnut stocks and refined finishes, which raise production costs and collector demand.
What distance should you zero a 300 Win Mag?
Most hunters zero 300 Win Mag rifles at 200 yards. At 250 yards, the bullet drops to about 3 inches below point-of-aim, marking the practical limit of that zero. Alternatively, sighting 3 inches high at 100 yards extends effective zero out to 300 yards, reducing holdover on longer shots.
What are the downsides of 300 Win Mag?
300 Win Mag produces significant recoil that fatigues shooters and complicates follow-up shots. Ammunition costs more than smaller calibers. It's overkill for deer and smaller game. Rifles chambered in it run pricier. Barrel wear accelerates faster due to high powder volume and velocity.
What was John Wayne's favorite rifle?
John Wayne favored the Winchester Model 1892 in his film roles, making the lever-action rifle iconic in Westerns. For big-game hunting, he used a .300 Weatherby Magnum, reportedly gifted by Roy Weatherby himself.
