Frequently Asked Questions
Winchester .357 Mag Lever Action rifle for sale
What is a 357 lever-action good for?
A .357 lever-action is well-suited for hunting deer and varmints at close range, home defense, and casual range shooting. It produces manageable recoil, accepts cheaper .38 Special ammunition, and delivers more velocity than a handgun, making it a practical, versatile choice for woods carry or ranch use.
Is a 357 more powerful than a 30/30?
No. A .30-30 cartridge delivers significantly more energy and velocity than .357 Magnum, especially beyond 100 yards. Testing shows the .30-30 produces roughly 30 percent more energy with comparable bullet weights. For hunting deer or extended-range shooting, the .30-30 rifle outperforms a .357 rifle decisively.
Will a 357 take down a deer?
Yes, .357 Magnum can take deer reliably within 50 yards using proper shot placement and quality expanding ammunition. Lever-action rifles extend this range somewhat due to higher velocity. Hunters have used it successfully for decades. Stick to vital shots and avoid marginal angles at any distance.
How much does a 357 rifle drop at 100 yards?
A .357 rifle zeroed at 100 yards has essentially zero drop at 100 yards by definition. If zeroed at 50 yards, it typically hits about 1–2 inches low at 100 yards. Exact figures vary with load, bullet weight, and barrel length.
What caliber did cowboys use?
Cowboys primarily used .45 Colt in revolvers and .44-40 Winchester, which conveniently worked in both rifles and handguns. The .38-40 was also common. The .357 Magnum came later, after the classic cowboy era ended in the early 1900s.
