Frequently Asked Questions
Springfield M1A for sale
Why is the M1A so expensive?
M1A rifles require extensive machining of the receiver and bolt, a labor-intensive process inherited from the M1 Garand design. Unlike modern battle rifles that use stamped-steel construction, each component demands precise fitting, driving up manufacturing costs significantly.
Is the M1A 7.62 or 308?
M1A rifles are chambered in .308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm NATO. However, not all .308 ammunition is safe to use. The M1A manual specifies standard factory .308 made to SAAMI specifications or 7.62x51 NATO ammunition only. Avoid hotter .308 loads, as excess pressure can cause problems in self-loading rifles like the M1A.
What is the difference between a M14 and a M1A?
M14 is the original military rifle with a full-auto selector switch and corresponding receiver cutout. The M1A is Springfield Armory's semi-auto civilian version, lacking the selector lug. Both are functionally similar otherwise, though M1A receivers have slightly wider frame rails suited to commercial manufacturing.
Which M1A model is best?
Best M1A depends on your use. Standard suits budget-conscious buyers and general shooting. Scout works well for versatility and shorter ranges. Loaded offers match-grade accuracy for precision work. SOCOM 16 handles close-quarters scenarios. Identify your primary purpose—hunting, defense, or target shooting—before deciding.
How far can an M1A shoot accurately?
M1A rifles typically shoot accurately to 300 yards reliably in most hands. Skilled marksmen can extend that to 600-800 yards with proper technique and optics. Reaching 1000 yards is possible with expert guidance and quality equipment—the rifle itself is a 1 to 1.5 MOA platform.
How much is a Springfield M1A Socom worth?
Springfield M1A SOCOM 16 rifles typically cost around $1,700 new, with most listings ranging $1,650–$1,750. Used prices vary widely by variant and condition: SOCOM 16 examples can range from $650 to $1,503, while SOCOM II averages around $1,412. Check current marketplace listings for exact pricing.
What does M1A Socom mean?
M1A SOCOM is Springfield Armory's compact variant of the M1A rifle. SOCOM stands for Special Operations Command. It features a 16.25-inch barrel, tactical rail system, and .308 Winchester chambering, making it shorter and more maneuverable than standard M1A models, suited for close-quarters use.
What is the best scope mount for a M1A?
Springfield Armory's 4th Generation Aluminum Scope Mount (MA4GENAM) is widely trusted for M1A rifles. It features a three-point locking system, aircraft-grade aluminum, and a full-length Picatinny rail. Not compatible with SOCOM or Tanker models. A steel version is available for heavier-duty use.
