Frequently Asked Questions
Savage B.MAG 17 WSM for sale
Is the 17 WSM dead?
Not officially dead, but struggling. Volquartsen discontinued their 17 WSM Summit rifle, and ammunition remains scarce with limited annual production. Used rifles still trade around $607 median, with a few variants available at retailers. Interest has waned as shooters migrate to alternatives like the 17 HMR.
How much is a 17 WSM rifle worth?
A 17 WSM rifle averages $885.75 new and $598.38 used, with a 12-month new average of $740.08. The Savage A17 Sporter is the most common model found across retailers. Prices may be affected by discontinued production and limited ammunition availability.
Is the Savage A17 WSM accurate?
Yes. The Savage A17 WSM is generally accurate for a semi-automatic rimfire, suitable for varmint hunting and target shooting. The .17 WSM cartridge shoots flat. Some rifles need minor tuning. Ammunition quality significantly affects results; consistent factory loads perform best.
Why is 17 WSM ammo so hard to find?
Limited manufacturer support historically drove scarcity. Winchester produces ammunition in measured batches, and few rifle makers chamber the cartridge. Availability is now improving — Winchester has released their own 17 WSM loads, and supply pipelines include scheduled future availability dates into 2026. Demand from existing shooters remains steady but supply is catching up.
How much does a 17 WSM drop at 200 yards?
A 20-grain .17 WSM bullet drops approximately 4.1 inches at 200 yards. Actual drop varies slightly depending on bullet weight, powder charge, and atmospheric conditions.
What are the best uses for 17 WSM ammo?
.17 WSM excels at varmint hunting—prairie dogs, woodchucks, and ground squirrels—out to 150-200 yards. Its flat trajectory and 3000 fps velocity suit target shooting. It also handles foxes and coyotes effectively, making it a solid choice for protecting livestock from predators.
Can I shoot 17 HMR in a 17 WSM rifle?
No. The 17 WSM is a larger, higher-pressure cartridge than the 17 HMR. While the HMR round may chamber in a WSM rifle, it can cause dangerous pressure irregularities and damage the firearm. Always use only the ammunition your rifle is chambered for.
