Frequently Asked Questions
Savage .17 WSM rifle
Has the 17 WSM been discontinued?
No, the 17 WSM has not been discontinued, but it has faced serious challenges. Hornady stopped making 17 WSM ammunition, and Winchester experienced manufacturing equipment problems in 2023 that hurt supply. Winchester reportedly plans new 17 WSM products, but availability remains uncertain. Check current stock before purchasing.
What rifles are available in 17 WSM?
Currently in production: Ruger 77/17 bolt-action, Savage A17 semi-auto, Primal Rights 17WSM TS Customs bolt-action, and Winchester XPert. Discontinued models include the Savage B Mag and Volquartsen Summit.
What is the most accurate 17 WSM rifle?
Accuracy varies by shooter and ammunition, but the Primal Rights 17WSM is noted by experienced owners as the most accurate 17 WSM rifle available. The Savage A17 and Ruger 77/17 also receive strong marks. Testing multiple rifles with your preferred ammunition before purchasing is advisable.
How much does a 17 WSM drop at 200 yards?
A 20 grain 17 WSM bullet drops approximately 4.1 inches at 200 yards when zeroed at 100 yards. The 17 HMR drops roughly 8.4 inches at the same distance. Actual drop varies with specific ammunition and conditions.
What is the best scope for a 17 WSM?
Scope choice depends on your shooting distance and preference. The BSA Super Mag offers a drop compensation reticle calibrated for 17 WSM out to 400 yards. The Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 and Athlon Argos BTR suit varmint hunting well. Most shooters find 3-9x magnification adequate for typical ranges under 200 yards.
Is 17 WSM a good round?
17 WSM excels for varmint hunting to 200 yards with a flatter trajectory than 17 HMR and wider bullet options. Drawbacks include limited ammunition availability and fewer rifle choices. Rifles typically run $380-$650. If you prioritize ammo selection and cost, 17 HMR may suit you better.
Can you shoot 17 HMR ammo in a 17 WSM rifle?
No. 17 HMR and 17 WSM are distinct cartridges with different dimensions and pressures. Attempting to fire 17 HMR in a 17 WSM rifle risks dangerous pressure spikes and firearm damage. Always use only the ammunition your rifle is chambered for.
What makes the Savage A17 unique?
Savage A17 is the first semi-automatic rifle designed specifically for 17 HMR. Its delayed-blowback action uses an interrupter lug that holds the bolt closed until chamber pressure drops, preventing case rupture—solving the longstanding challenge of reliably cycling bottlenecked rimfire cartridges in a semi-automatic platform.
