Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger Vaquero for sale
Is the Ruger Vaquero discontinued?
No, the Ruger Vaquero is currently in production. Standard models retail around $840 and are widely available. However, SASS variants are currently unavailable on Ruger's site, and it is unclear whether Ruger will continue producing them.
How much does a Ruger Vaquero 357 cost?
Ruger Vaquero .357 Magnum revolvers typically cost around $840 new. Prices range from roughly $670 to $1,750 depending on barrel length, finish, and variant. Used examples can be found for less through private sales or gun auction sites.
Can Ruger Vaquero handle hot loads?
The New Vaquero handles +P .45 Colt loads per Ruger, though extreme Ruger/TC-level loads are not recommended. The Vaquero is also available in .44 Magnum, which handles hot loads well. Avoid only the most extreme magnum-level pressures beyond what Ruger explicitly approves for each chambering.
Is a Ruger Vaquero a good gun?
Whether it's "good" depends on your needs. Ruger Vaqueros earn praise for durability, accuracy, and affordability among cowboy action shooters and hunters. The single-action design and fixed sights suit traditional shooting. If you want modern ergonomics or adjustable sights, consider alternatives.
How accurate is the 45 Colt Vaquero?
The Vaquero in 45 Colt is generally accurate enough for practical shooting and cowboy action competition. Five-shot groups at 25 yards typically range from one to three inches depending on ammunition and shooter skill. Fixed sights limit precision adjustments, but handloaded ammunition often improves results noticeably.
What's the difference between Ruger Vaquero and New Vaquero?
Original Vaquero uses a large Blackhawk-sized frame, while the New Vaquero uses a smaller medium frame closer to a Colt SAA. The New Vaquero has improved cylinder-to-loading-gate alignment for easier loading. The original offers more grip clearance. Both share common calibers but differ noticeably in size and feel.
What is the difference between a Ruger Blackhawk and a Vaquero?
The Blackhawk has adjustable rear sights and a larger frame. The Vaquero uses fixed sights and rounded top frame contours similar to a Colt Single Action Army. The New Vaquero is medium-framed, smaller than the Blackhawk, making it popular for cowboy action shooting competitions.
Can you dry-fire a Ruger Vaquero?
Yes, Ruger's owner manual explicitly states that the Vaquero can be dry-fired safely without damaging the firing pin or other components. The transfer bar and internal firing pin stop protect critical parts during dry-fire practice.
