Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger Super Blackhawk for sale
How much does a Super Blackhawk cost?
Ruger Super Blackhawk revolvers have an MSRP of $1,099. New models average around $785, with used examples averaging around $668. Retail listings typically run $810–$853, varying by barrel length, finish, and retailer.
What is the difference between the Ruger Blackhawk and the Super Blackhawk?
The Super Blackhawk features a larger Dragoon-style grip frame, unfluted cylinder, and heavier overall construction designed for sustained .44 Magnum shooting. The standard Blackhawk uses a smaller Colt SAA-style grip frame and is chambered in lower-pressure cartridges like .357 Magnum and .45 Colt.
Is the Ruger Super Blackhawk a good gun?
Whether it's "good" depends on your needs. Super Blackhawks excel for hunting and handloading enthusiasts wanting a robust .44 Magnum with proven accuracy and durability. Recoil is substantial. For single-action range or field use, it's well-regarded. Expect to pay around $820 retail.
Will Super Blackhawk grips fit a Blackhawk?
Super Blackhawk grips don't always fit a standard Blackhawk. The 7.5" Super Blackhawk with a squared back trigger guard uses a larger Dragoon-style frame incompatible with the Blackhawk. However, other Super Blackhawk variants with round trigger guards may have interchangeable grips with the Blackhawk, so compatibility depends on the specific model.
How do I find out when my Ruger was made?
Enter your serial number in the search window on Ruger's website to find the ship date and model details. Shipping date may differ from the actual manufacturing date, particularly for older guns. For precise dating, contact Ruger directly through their official website or consult reference guides documenting production changes.
What year did the Super Blackhawk come out?
The Super Blackhawk was introduced in 1959.
What's the difference between old and new Blackhawks?
Old Model Blackhawks (pre-1973) lack a transfer bar safety and use a three-screw design. New Models feature a transfer bar mechanism for safer carry and a two-screw frame. Both share the same frame size, though pre-1963 Flat Tops use a smaller Colt-sized frame.
What are the common uses of the Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Mag?
Hunters use the Super Blackhawk for big game like deer and wild boar thanks to its .44 Magnum power. It's also popular for wilderness defense and target shooting. Its single-action design and full-size frame suit these demanding uses well.
