Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger American 9mm for sale
Is the Ruger American 9mm a good gun?
The Ruger American 9mm is well-regarded for reliability, accuracy, and comfortable ergonomics. Users praise its natural grip angle, mild recoil, and trigger quality. Available in roughly 20 variants around $500, it's a solid option for home defense or concealed carry.
What are common Ruger American 9mm problems?
Ruger issued a safety bulletin for some American 9mm pistols due to premature wear on locking surfaces between the slide and barrel. Ruger offers free retrofits to affected owners. Occasional extractor issues causing feeding failures have also been reported.
Did Ruger discontinue the Ruger American?
Yes. Ruger discontinued the American Pistol in early 2026, and it now appears on Ruger's official discontinued models list. You may still find remaining inventory across retailers. The Ruger American Rifle line continues separately, so references to an ongoing American series likely refer to the rifle, not the pistol.
Which Ruger 9mm is the best?
"Best" depends on your needs. The Max-9 suits concealed carry at under 19 ounces with 13-round capacity. The Security-9 is also an excellent choice for everyday concealed carry. Compare specs, ergonomics, and intended use to choose the right fit.
What is the recall on the Ruger American pistol?
Ruger issued a safety bulletin for some American Pistols chambered in 9mm with serial prefixes "860" and "862" due to premature wear on locking surfaces between the slide and barrel. This typically occurs above 10,000 rounds. Ruger offers free retrofits. .45 Auto models are unaffected.
How much is a Ruger American Pistol 9mm?
Ruger American Pistol 9mm models typically cost between $349.99 and $514.99, with the average new price around $374 and used around $272. Price varies by variant, barrel length, frame size, and finish across different retailers.
What magazine does the Ruger American use?
The Ruger American pistol uses proprietary double-stack magazines. The 9mm version holds 17 rounds and the .45 ACP version holds 10 rounds. The Ruger American rifle uses a rotary magazine, with capacity varying by caliber—typically 4 to 10 rounds depending on the chambering.
Does Ruger American have a threaded barrel?
Ruger American pistols don't come with threaded barrels from the factory. However, Ruger American Rimfire rifles do offer threaded barrel models with a 1/2"-28 thread pattern and factory-installed thread protectors across multiple calibers.
