Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger American 308 for sale
Is the Ruger American 308 a good gun?
The Ruger American in .308 Winchester is a reliable, accurate bolt-action rifle priced around $450. It features a hammer-forged barrel and comfortable ergonomic stock, making it well-suited for hunting and range shooting. It delivers strong performance for its price point.
What are the common problems with Ruger 308?
User reports mention occasional accuracy variation and loose bolt handles on some American rifles. Extractor issues appear rare but documented. Most owners find the gun reliable for hunting and range use. Individual rifles may require load development or minor adjustments to perform optimally.
What is the effective range of a Ruger American 308?
Effective range depends on your target. For medium game like whitetail deer, ethical hunting shots with the .308 Winchester are typically kept within 300–500 yards, with traditional cup-and-core bullets reliably expanding to around 350–375 yards. Shooter skill and ammunition choice remain key factors alongside the Ruger American's 22-inch barrel.
What's the difference between Ruger American gen 1 and gen 2?
Gen 2 rifles feature a refined stock with molded grip areas, barrel fluting, and a Cerakote finish not found on Gen 1. The action feels smoother overall. Both generations share the same core mechanics and accuracy. Gen 2 feels more polished, with the finish and fluting being the most visible upgrades.
Which Ruger American Gen 2 model is best?
Best depends on your needs. The Standard suits general hunting and range work. The Ranch has a 16.1-inch barrel for brush hunting. The Predator offers a 22-inch barrel optimized for varmint hunting. All share the same Gen 2 action. Choose based on barrel length and intended use.
What magazines are compatible with Ruger American 308?
Ruger American rifles in .308 Winchester use Ruger factory short-action magazines. The standard 4-round flush-fit polymer magazine is also compatible with 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, .243 Win., and 7mm-08 Rem. For higher capacity, third-party NT-Mags offers 5 and 10-round magazines specifically for the Ruger American.
Is the Ruger American discontinued?
Ruger American rifles remain in production and are available through numerous retailers, typically priced around $450. However, some related models in the broader Ruger American family have been discontinued, including the Ruger American Pistol, SFAR, and AR-556. Stock levels vary by dealer and distributor.
What stocks fit Ruger American?
Ruger American rifles accept drop-in stocks from Magpul, MDT, Sharps Bros, WOOX, and Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks, with Boyds offering wood and laminate options. Both short-action and long-action variants are supported across Standard, Target, and Predator models. Verify compatibility with your specific variant before purchasing, as fitment varies by action type and barrel profile.
