Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger 556 for sale
Is Ruger discontinuing the AR-556?
Ruger has discontinued at least some AR-556 variants, including the AR-556 pistol, and has replaced portions of the line with the Harrier.
Is the Ruger AR-556 a good gun?
The Ruger AR-556 is well-regarded for reliability and ease of use. It handles well for range shooting, home defense, or competition. It carries an attractive price point that undercuts much of the AR-15 market, delivering strong value and suiting both beginners and experienced shooters.
Can I shoot 223 out of my Ruger 556?
Yes. The Ruger AR-556 is chambered in 5.56 NATO, which safely accepts both 5.56 and .223 Remington ammunition. Since .223 runs at lower pressure, it won't damage the rifle. You may see minor accuracy differences between the two, but both are safe to shoot.
What is a used Ruger AR-556 worth?
Used Ruger AR-556 rifles typically sell for $521–$617 in good condition, with very good to excellent examples ranging $400–$500. Prices vary from around $496 to over $1,200 depending on variant, included accessories, and local demand. Check recent sold listings on GunBroker or local gun shops for current pricing.
Does Ruger make an AR-15 pistol?
Yes, Ruger makes the AR-556 Pistol, an AR-15-style pistol available in multiple calibers including 5.56 NATO, .300 Blackout, 450 Bushmaster, and 350 Legend. Following the ATF's 2023 rule change, pistol stabilizing braces were removed or replaced on these models. Retail price is typically around $859.
Does the Ruger 556 have a full auto bolt?
No. The AR-556 ships with a full-auto rated bolt carrier group machined from 9310 alloy steel, shot-peened and pressure tested. However, the rifle remains semi-auto only. Modifying the fire control group to enable full-auto fire is illegal for civilians.
Does Ruger have a 30 round magazine?
Ruger offers 30-round magazines for the Mini-30 in 7.62x39. For the AR-556, Ruger doesn't manufacture their own 30-round magazines, but Magpul 30-round PMAG magazines in 5.56 NATO/.223 Rem. are compatible. Availability varies by state.
