Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger 450 Bushmaster for sale
Is 450 Bushmaster more powerful than 308?
.450 Bushmaster hits harder at close range but .308 Winchester outperforms it beyond 300 yards. .450 excels within 250 yards on large game; .308 maintains energy past 600 yards. Choice depends on your hunting distance and terrain.
Is a 450 Bushmaster worth it?
Worth depends on your needs. .450 Bushmaster excels for close-range hunting within 250 yards, delivering substantial energy on big game. Rifles typically run $450–$1,230. If you hunt thick brush or need straight-wall cartridge compliance, it's a strong choice. For shots beyond 250 yards, .308 Win performs better.
How far can a 450 Bushmaster shoot accurately?
.450 Bushmaster is effective for hunting out to around 200 yards, with ethical kill range starting to drop off closer to 150 yards for some hunters. Bullet drop becomes serious beyond that, though the cartridge can reach targets at 300 yards before drop makes accuracy impractical. It remains a short-range cartridge.
How much does a 450 drop at 200 yards?
Zeroed at 100 yards, a .450 Bushmaster drops roughly 12 inches at 200 yards. Most hunters keep shots within 150–200 yards where the cartridge remains effective on deer-sized game.
Does 450 Bushmaster kick hard?
.450 Bushmaster generates roughly 21 ft-lbs of recoil energy. Most shooters find it manageable on AR platforms, kicking less than a 12-gauge slug or .30-06. Heavier rifles absorb more recoil. Sensitive shooters may notice it, but it rarely causes flinching with proper technique.
What caliber is a 450 Bushmaster comparable to?
The .450 Bushmaster is most comparable to the .45-70 Government in terms of energy and hunting capability. It fires .452-inch diameter bullets and delivers similar terminal performance at short to medium ranges, though the .45-70 can be loaded to higher pressures in strong actions.
What are the disadvantages of a 450 Bushmaster?
Significant recoil is the primary drawback, especially in lighter rifles. Bullets lose velocity quickly beyond moderate range, limiting effective distance. Expansion can be inconsistent if shots hit only soft tissue. Trajectory is steep, making longer shots challenging. Ammunition costs more than common rifle cartridges.
Is a 450 Bushmaster a AR-15 or AR-10?
.450 Bushmaster is an AR-15 cartridge. It fires from standard AR-15 receivers using a modified upper, not the larger AR-10 platform. Manufacturers like Ruger chamber it in AR-15-style rifles for big game hunting. The AR-10 is built around larger cartridges like .308 Winchester.
What is the difference between the Ruger American gen 1 and gen 2?
Gen 2 rifles feature refined ergonomics with molded grip areas replacing angular grooves, an improved trigger, and a redesigned stock. Mechanical upgrades include milling on the bolt and receiver plus a redesigned safety tab. Parts are similar but do not simply interchange — for example, the Gen 1 safety must be used on the Gen 2 trigger housing.
What animals is a 450 Bushmaster good for?
The .450 Bushmaster is well-suited for whitetail deer, black bear, and feral hogs inside 150 yards. It can take elk and moose at close range but becomes marginal beyond that. It's legal for deer in straight-wall cartridge states and effective on smaller animals like rabbits.
What magazines fit in a Ruger American 450 Bushmaster?
The Ruger American in .450 Bushmaster uses a proprietary 3-round single-stack magazine. Only Ruger's factory magazines for this specific chambering fit correctly, as the .450 Bushmaster's large diameter requires a dedicated magazine not interchangeable with other Ruger American calibers.
Does Ruger make a 450 Bushmaster rifle?
Yes, Ruger manufactures .450 Bushmaster rifles. The Ruger American Ranch and Ruger American Gen II are current bolt-action models. Prices typically run around $586, with most listings falling between $450 and $1,230 across multiple retailers.
What is the ideal barrel length for a 450 Bushmaster?
Most hunters prefer 16" to 20" barrels for .450 Bushmaster. Shorter 16" barrels handle better in thick cover, while 20" barrels produce higher velocity and better performance beyond 200 yards. Match your choice to your hunting terrain and typical shot distances.
What size thread is a Ruger 450 Bushmaster?
Ruger's .450 Bushmaster rifles use 11/16"-24 RH muzzle threads. This pattern is compatible with most aftermarket suppressors and muzzle brakes designed for the caliber. To verify, measure the outer diameter—11/16" threads measure 0.683 inches.
Is it worth suppressing a 450 Bushmaster?
Suppressing .450 Bushmaster meaningfully reduces muzzle blast and recoil, benefiting hunters who need quick follow-up shots. Use a suppressor rated for .46 caliber or larger. Some suppressors can bring the rifle to hearing-safe levels, and the reduction in concussion and noise is noticeable and practical.
