Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger 44 for sale
Does Ruger still make the Model 44?
Ruger discontinued the Model 44 carbine in 1985. They also produced the 77/44 bolt-action rifle from 1995 to 2005, and the Deerfield Carbine from 2000–2006, both now discontinued. Ruger still makes .44 Magnum revolvers like the Super Blackhawk and Redhawk, but no current rifle carries the Model 44 name.
Can you shoot .44 Special in a .44 mag?
Yes, .44 Magnum revolvers safely fire .44 Special rounds. Both cartridges share the same .429-inch bullet diameter and nearly identical case design. Clean the cylinder chambers regularly when alternating between them to prevent lead buildup that could cause chambering problems with the longer Magnum cases.
What is the best .44 Magnum revolver?
"Best" depends on your needs. The Smith & Wesson Model 29 and Ruger Super Redhawk are top choices. Consider intended use—hunting, target shooting, or woods carry—and handle several models before deciding.
What is the price of the Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag?
Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum revolvers have an MSRP of $1,449.00, with new market prices averaging $1,052.33 and used averaging $824.28. Street prices typically range from $899.99 to $1,015.92, varying by barrel length, finish, and condition.
What are the common Ruger Redhawk problems?
Redhawk owners report occasional light strikes, cylinder binding, and trigger issues. Some guns experience barrel-threading problems from overly tight installation. Cast lead ammunition can cause chambering difficulties in some examples. Most function reliably with factory jacketed rounds. Quality control varies, so inspect before purchase.
What is the difference between a Ruger Blackhawk and a Super Blackhawk?
The Super Blackhawk features a larger Dragoon-style grip frame versus the Blackhawk's smaller SAA-style grip, and a wider trigger guard. Most Super Blackhawks have an unfluted cylinder, though the 5.5" barrel version has a fluted cylinder. The Blackhawk is available in multiple calibers including .357 Magnum and .45 Colt.
Is Ruger Super Blackhawk a good gun?
The Super Blackhawk is a well-built, accurate single-action revolver chambered in .44 Magnum. It's well-suited for handgun hunting and bear defense but less practical for casual shooting due to heavy recoil and a slower reload process. Retail pricing runs roughly $800–$950.
What year is a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum?
Ruger introduced a .44 Magnum Blackhawk in 1956, followed by the Super Blackhawk in 1959. The New Model Super Blackhawk began in 1973 and continues today. To pinpoint your specific gun's year, check the serial number against Ruger's production charts or contact their Service Department at 336-949-5200.
