Frequently Asked Questions
Ruger 22 bolt action for sale
Does Ruger make a bolt-action 22 LR?
Yes. Ruger makes two bolt-action .22 LR rifles: the American Rimfire and the Precision Rimfire. Both accept detachable rotary magazines and include receiver-mounted scope bases. The American Rimfire holds 10 rounds; the Precision Rimfire holds 15.
What are the common problems with Ruger 22s?
Ruger .22 rifles occasionally experience failure to feed or eject, particularly with certain magazines or low-velocity ammunition. Regular cleaning, using quality ammo, and selecting compatible magazines resolves most issues. A break-in period of 200-500 rounds is common. Ruger's warranty covers persistent malfunctions.
What is the lifespan of a Ruger 22 rifle?
Ruger .22 rifles typically last decades with proper maintenance. Barrels commonly handle 50,000+ rounds before accuracy noticeably declines; many shooters report higher counts. Actions rarely wear out. Lifespan depends primarily on maintenance habits and ammunition quality rather than design limits.
What is a 22LR bolt action rifle good for?
Bolt-action .22 LR rifles excel at plinking, small-game hunting, and marksmanship training. Low recoil makes them ideal for new shooters learning fundamentals. They also let hunters practice bolt-cycling mechanics with their primary big-game rifle action before field use, building proficiency without heavy recoil fatigue.
What is the cost of a Ruger 22?
Ruger .22 firearms start below $300, with models like the 10/22 Carbine and Wrangler revolver available under $280. Prices vary by model, condition, and retailer. Our marketplace listings reflect a range of options across popular models including the 10/22 Carbine and American Rimfire bolt-action.
Does Ruger make a 22 rifle with a threaded barrel?
Yes. Ruger offers the 10/22 with a threaded barrel for suppressor use. The American Rimfire and Precision Rimfire bolt-actions are also available with threaded barrels in some configurations. Pricing typically starts around $474, varying by model and retailer.
What is the best Ruger 22 rifle?
"Best" depends on your needs. The 10/22 Carbine dominates for versatility, customization, and reliability across plinking, hunting, and competition. For precision shooting, consider the Precision .22 LR. For bolt-action simplicity, the American Rimfire offers solid accuracy. All three remain in production and widely available.
What is a bolt-action 22 with wood stock?
A bolt-action .22 with a wood stock is a manually cycled rimfire rifle featuring a traditional wooden stock. Common examples include the Ruger American Rimfire and Savage Mark II. These rifles are popular for small-game hunting, target shooting, and plinking due to their accuracy and classic appearance.
Does the Ruger American have a bull barrel?
The Ruger American Rimfire Target, chambered in .22 LR or .22 WMR, comes with an 18-inch cold hammer-forged bull barrel threaded at 1/2"-28. This is a rimfire-specific variant. Standard Ruger American centerfire rifles use conventional or spiral-fluted barrels. Check the specific variant before purchasing.
What is the point of a bull barrel on a 22?
A bull barrel on a .22 reduces muzzle vibration, which improves accuracy and shot consistency. The added weight steadies the rifle during offhand shooting and dampens recoil. Competitive and target shooters favor them when precision is the priority.
What is the most accurate 22 bolt-action rifle?
Accuracy varies by rifle and shooter, but the CZ 457 and Savage Mark II consistently rank among the most accurate bolt-action .22 rifles. The Ruger Precision Rimfire is also highly regarded. All three are capable of sub-MOA groups with quality ammunition.
What are the disadvantages of bolt-action 22 rifles?
Bolt-action .22s require manual cycling between shots, slowing follow-up fire compared to semi-autos. They're less suited for rapid-fire plinking or hunting fast-moving game. Capacity is typically lower. They also occupy a different niche than semi-autos, prioritizing accuracy and reliable feeding of low-velocity match ammo over speed.
At what distance is a 22 rifle accurate?
A .22 LR rifle is accurate to about 100–150 yards with standard ammunition. Match-grade ammo and quality rifles can extend this to 200+ yards. Practical range depends on rifle quality, barrel length, ammunition, optics, and shooter skill.
