Frequently Asked Questions
Mossberg Maverick 88 for sale
Is a Mossberg Maverick 88 a good gun?
Whether it's good depends on your needs. It's a reliable, budget-friendly pump shotgun typically around $259, available in 12 and 20 gauge with six-round capacity. Works well for home defense and hunting. Recoil is manageable with proper technique. Many owners praise its value, though it has fewer interchangeable parts than the Mossberg 500.
Why is the Maverick 88 so cheap?
Mossberg keeps costs down by using simpler manufacturing, fewer machined parts, and basic plastic furniture instead of wood or premium finishes. The Maverick 88 also shares parts with the Mossberg 500 but omits some features. The result is a functional, reliable pump shotgun for around $250.
Can I shoot slugs through my Maverick 88?
Yes, your Maverick 88 handles slugs fine in 2¾" or 3" shells. Avoid shooting slugs through a full choke—use improved cylinder, modified, or cylinder bore instead. Standard Foster-type rifled slugs work well in smoothbore barrels. Check your barrel's choke before shooting.
Is it okay to dry fire a Mossberg Maverick 88?
Yes, dry firing a Maverick 88 is safe. Mossberg pump shotguns are built to handle it without damage. If you prefer extra caution, snap caps are inexpensive and protect the firing pin during extended dry-fire practice.
What ammo is best for the Maverick 88?
Your Maverick 88 chambers 12 or 20 gauge depending on your model. For home defense, 00 buckshot is the standard choice. For hunting, match your load to the game and distance. Federal, Winchester, and Aguila all perform reliably. Use quality ammunition matched to your gun's gauge.
How many rounds can a Mossberg Maverick 88 hold?
Maverick 88 capacity varies by configuration. The 18.5-inch security model holds 5+1 rounds (6 total), while another security model holds 7+1 rounds (8 total). Barrel length and configuration affect capacity. A removable plug reduces magazine capacity to 2 rounds for waterfowl hunting compliance.
What is the difference between the Maverick 88 and the Maverick 88 security?
The Maverick 88 Security has an 18.5-inch barrel with a bead sight designed for home defense, while standard Maverick 88 models have longer barrels for hunting. The Security version holds 5+1 rounds. Both use the same pump action and cross-bolt safety.
What parts are compatible with the Maverick 88?
Maverick 88 stocks, forends, and accessories are available from manufacturers like ATI. Many Mossberg 500 series parts interchange with the Maverick 88, including buttstocks. Magazine tubes and barrels from 500/590 models may fit, but verify compatibility before purchasing, as some parts are gauge-specific.
