Frequently Asked Questions
Desert Eagle .50 AE for sale
Is it worth buying a Desert Eagle?
Worth depends on your priorities. At around $2,050, Desert Eagles perform well at the range and for hunting, offering surprising accuracy. They're enjoyable to shoot but heavy and impractical for self-defense. If you want a powerful pistol for sport use and can justify the cost, yes. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
How much is a used Desert Eagle 50 AE?
Used Desert Eagle .50 AE pistols typically sell for $1,500–$2,000, with a 12-month average around $1,740. Condition, barrel length, and finish affect pricing. New models average around $2,197. Check local gun shops or online listings like GunBroker for current inventory.
What ammo does a Desert Eagle 50 use?
The Desert Eagle chambered in .50 uses .50 Action Express (.50 AE) ammunition. The pistol also comes in .44 Magnum, .357 Magnum, and 9mm variants. Check your barrel markings to confirm your specific chambering, as barrels are interchangeable on Desert Eagle pistols.
How many bullets does a Desert Eagle 50 hold?
A Desert Eagle chambered in .50 AE holds 7 rounds. Capacity varies by caliber: .44 Magnum holds 8 rounds and .357 Magnum holds 9 rounds. All models are semi-automatic pistols made by Magnum Research.
Is 50 AE more powerful than 44 Magnum?
Yes. The .50 AE typically produces around 1,500 ft-lbs of muzzle energy compared to the .44 Magnum's 1,000–1,200 ft-lbs. It fires a heavier bullet at similar velocities, making it noticeably more powerful, though the .44 Magnum remains more practical due to lighter, smaller firearms.
Are all desert eagles made in Israel?
No. Desert Eagles were originally manufactured in Israel by Israel Military Industries until 2009. Magnum Research then moved production to their Minnesota facility, where current models are made. Some older variants still carry Israeli markings from that earlier period.
Are 50 AE and 50 CAL the same?
No. .50 AE (Action Express) and .50 Cal typically refers to .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun). Both use .50-inch bullets but are entirely different cartridges. .50 AE is a handgun round delivering roughly 1,500 ft-lbs of energy; .50 BMG is a rifle cartridge producing about 13,000 ft-lbs. They are not interchangeable.
Why is 50 AE so expensive?
.50 AE is expensive because it's a specialty magnum cartridge produced in low volumes for a small market. Manufacturing costs are higher due to its large size and powerful specs. Guns chambered for it, like the Desert Eagle, are also costly due to their complex, heavy-duty construction.
Why are desert eagles expensive?
Desert Eagles are expensive due to precision CNC manufacturing, tight tolerances, and low production volume. Their gas-operated rotating bolt system handles powerful magnum calibers like .50 AE and .44 Magnum, requiring quality materials and specialized engineering. Retail prices typically run around $2,050.
What is a 50 AE good for?
.50 AE is suited for hunting large game and backcountry defense. Its 300-grain bullet delivers roughly 1,500 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, exceeding .44 Magnum significantly. Heavy recoil and expensive ammunition make it impractical for casual use or everyday carry.
What are the disadvantages of using 50 AE?
.50 AE carries significant drawbacks: extreme recoil and muzzle blast make follow-up shots difficult and hearing protection essential. Ammunition costs substantially more than common calibers and availability is limited. The Desert Eagle itself is heavy and bulky for carry. Reliability issues arise from improper grip technique.
Is 50 AE good for self-defense?
.50 AE delivers extreme stopping power but isn't ideal for self-defense. Heavy recoil makes follow-up shots difficult, ammunition costs significantly more than standard calibers, and the Desert Eagle pistol is too large for concealed carry. Better choices exist for home or personal defense.
Can a Desert Eagle be concealed carry?
No. Desert Eagle pistols weigh over 4 pounds with barrels exceeding 6 inches, making concealment impractical for most people. They are designed for range shooting, hunting, and open carry. If concealed carry is your goal, consider a compact or subcompact pistol instead.
Which is more powerful, 50 AE or 500 Magnum?
.500 S&W Magnum is significantly more powerful, generating 2,400–3,000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy versus .50 AE's 1,200–1,400 ft-lbs—roughly double to triple the energy. The .500 S&W is a revolver hunting cartridge; the .50 AE is a semi-automatic pistol round, primarily chambered in the Desert Eagle.
Will a bulletproof vest stop a Desert Eagle?
A Level IIIA soft vest reliably stops .44 Magnum and .357 Magnum Desert Eagle rounds. The .50 AE caliber may defeat Level IIIA protection. Level III or IV hard armor plates provide adequate protection against .50 AE rounds.
