Frequently Asked Questions

Colt 1911 .38 Super for sale

What is special about a Colt 1911 .38 Super?

The .38 Super cartridge fires at higher velocity than .45 ACP with a flatter trajectory. It was once the most powerful American handgun cartridge and remains popular in competitive shooting. The round headspaces on its semi-rim rather than the case mouth, a distinctive technical feature.

Why are Colt 1911s so expensive?

Colt 1911s typically cost $851–$3,763 because they use machined steel parts requiring precision manufacturing and hand-fitting of components like extractors and barrels. Colt's reputation and American manufacturing also add to the price. Budget 1911s from Rock Island Armory or Turkish makers start around $400–$500.

Is a Colt 1911 better than a Glock?

Neither is objectively "better"—it depends on your priorities. Glocks offer higher capacity, lower cost, and minimal maintenance. This Colt 1911 is chambered in .38 Super, offering single-stack ergonomics and a refined trigger. Your hand size, intended use, and budget should drive the decision. Test both before buying.

Do Colt 1911 hold their value?

Colt 1911s generally hold their value well due to strong brand recognition and quality construction. Original Colts, especially older models, often appreciate. Secondary market prices vary by condition and configuration. Compared to budget alternatives, Colts typically command stronger resale prices, though Springfield and Kimber also retain value reasonably well.

Are Colt Gold cups any good?

Gold Cups are well-regarded 1911s known for good triggers and solid build quality. Priced from around $1,000 to over $1,500, they offer reasonable value for range and competition use. Most shoot reliably, though occasional accuracy issues may require barrel fitting. Inspect individually since quality control can vary between examples.

What does series 80 mean on 1911?

Series 80 refers to Colt's 1911 design introduced in 1983, featuring a firing pin safety actuated by the trigger to prevent accidental discharge if dropped. It also uses a quarter-cock hammer ledge instead of half-cock hooks. These changes distinguish it from the earlier Series 70 model.

How many rounds does a 1911-38 Super hold?

A 1911 chambered in .38 Super typically holds 9 rounds in a single-stack magazine, plus one in the chamber for 10 total.
