Frequently Asked Questions
S&W Governor Ammo for Sale
What size 410 shells does the governor take?
The Governor accepts 2.5-inch .410 shells only — chambering 3-inch shells is a hard limitation, not a recommendation. It also chambers .45 Colt and .45 ACP rounds with moon clips. The cylinder physically cannot accommodate 3-inch .410 shells.
Can S&W governor shoot 410 slugs?
Yes, the Governor shoots .410 slugs safely. It chambers 2.5-inch .410 shells, including slug loads. Stick to 2.5-inch shells only—the cylinder won't accept 3-inch .410 ammunition.
What are the pros and cons of the S&W Governor?
Pros: Fires .410 bore, .45 Colt, and .45 ACP interchangeably, offers six-round capacity, and suits both defense and hunting. Cons: Limited to 2.5-inch .410 shells, .45 ACP requires moon clips, and the large frame hinders concealed carry. Rubber grips help keep recoil manageable across all load types.
How accurate is the S&W governor?
Governor accuracy averages 3.6 inches with .45 ACP and 3.0 inches with .45 Colt at 25 yards, each figure derived from four five-shot groups. It meets defensive use standards, though the multi-caliber chamber compromises precision compared to dedicated pistols.
Which is better, Taurus Judge or S&W governor?
The Governor edges out the Judge in versatility by accepting .45 ACP via moon clips alongside .410 and .45 Colt, and features a smoother trigger and better shot patterns. The Judge offers superior balance, accuracy, lighter weight, and stronger recoil management due to its heavier frame and grip design. Test both if possible.
What ammo types can the S&W Governor use?
Smith & Wesson Governor fires three cartridge types: .45 ACP, .45 Colt, and .410 bore shotshells. You can load all three in the same cylinder and mix them as needed. .410 loads include birdshot, buckshot, slugs, and specialty defense rounds.
