Frequently Asked Questions
Federal .224 Valkyrie Ammo for Sale
What is the best bullet for 224 Valkyrie?
Best choice depends on your use. The Federal Gold Medal 80.5-grain Berger excels for precision shooting and competition. Barnes 78-grain TSX works well for hunting. Federal Fusion 90-grain soft points offer versatility across applications.
Can I shoot 224 Valkyrie in 223?
No. .224 Valkyrie requires its own dedicated barrel and upper receiver. The cartridge is longer with a different case design and will not chamber in a .223 Rem rifle. Attempting to force it risks dangerous pressure spikes and serious firearm damage.
What is 224 Valkyrie ammo used for?
.224 Valkyrie is used for long-range target shooting, competition, varmint and predator hunting, and medium game hunting. It maintains supersonic velocity past 1,000 yards from an AR-15 platform with minimal recoil, making it popular among precision shooters who want extended range without switching to a larger rifle.
Can you use 223 mags for 224 Valkyrie?
No. The .224 Valkyrie uses a wider case than .223 Rem, so standard .223 magazines won't feed it reliably and capacity drops to 3–4 rounds. Use dedicated .224 Valkyrie magazines, which are based on 6.8 SPC magazine bodies.
How much does a 224 Valkyrie drop at 300 yards?
At 300 yards, a .224 Valkyrie drops approximately 8.8 inches when zeroed at 200 yards. This varies with bullet weight, muzzle velocity, and conditions. For precise figures, consult a ballistic calculator using your specific load's muzzle velocity and ballistic coefficient.
What are the disadvantages of the .224 Valkyrie?
.224 Valkyrie has limited ammunition availability and a smaller shooter base than .223 Rem, reducing aftermarket support. Early rifles suffered feeding reliability issues. Barrel life is moderate, and competition from cartridges like 6mm ARC has further slowed adoption, making components harder to source.
Can you hunt deer with 224 Valkyrie?
Yes. .224 Valkyrie works for deer hunting with proper ammunition. Federal's 90-grain Fusion load at 2700 fps delivers adequate penetration and energy for ethical kills at moderate ranges. Recoil is minimal, making it suitable for sensitive shooters. However, shot placement matters more with this lighter cartridge than with larger calibers.
What bullets does federal fusion use?
Federal Fusion ammunition uses bonded soft point bullets with an electrochemically fused copper jacket and lead core. Federal also offers Fusion Tipped variants featuring a polymer tip for improved ballistic coefficient and long-range accuracy. Both designs prioritize controlled expansion and deep penetration for hunting applications.
