Hornady’s ELD-X Series is a technologically advanced, match-accurate hunting bullet that offers some of the highest in-class BCs as well as consistent, controlled expansion at all practical hunting distances. One of the ELD-X’s more notable features is the HeatShield polymer tip. On other polymer-tipped bullets, the tip deforms due to aerodynamic friction which causes a degradation in accuracy. The HeatShield tip resists the deformation caused by aerodynamic friction, greatly enhancing long range accuracy. The HeatShield also drives backwards into the bullet during low velocity impacts to initiate bullet expansion. This exhibits a large mushroom with 85% to 90% weight retention. During high velocity impacts, a thick shank and high interlock ring keep the jacket and core together with a weight retention between 50% to 60%. In both low and high velocity impacts, the bullet continuously expands throughout the penetration process, creating a large wound channel to ensure maximum lethality.
