Most of the M1-safe 30-06 on the market is loaded with full metal jacket projectiles. This makes sense, because M2 ball is loaded with – you guessed it – full metal jacket projectiles.
But this American-made ammo, by Underwood? It’s loaded with Nosler Custom Competition hollow point boat tail match bullets. The HPBT’s custom quality jacket, super narrow and ballistically efficient HP nose, voidless form-fitted lead-alloy core, and pronounced boat tail all contribute to its enormous accuracy. A normal M2 ball load has a G1 BC* of 0.405. This168 grain load’s G1 BC soars over at 0.460.
Underwood’s low-friction nickel-plated brass cases and flash-suppressed propellant both make welcome appearances in this ammo. All that’s left to point out is what snipers already know: the HPBT does not function as a conventional hunting bullet. Its thin jacket and nonfunctional nose cavity do not produce the deep, wide wound channel favored for deer hunting.
*A numeric measure of a bullet’s ability to overcome frontal air resistance; higher numbers indicate comparably flatter trajectory, increased wind resistance, and higher striking energy.
