Frequently Asked Questions
Sig Sauer Brace for sale
Are pistol braces illegal again in 2026?
Pistol brace legality remains unsettled. A 2023 ATF rule classifying braced pistols as short-barreled rifles was vacated in court, but ATF continues treating some braced pistols as illegal SBRs and refuses to clarify which ones. Consult a firearms attorney for guidance on your specific situation and jurisdiction.
Is it legal to use a pistol brace as a stock?
Pistol braces are legal to own, sell, and use. Per current ATF guidance, braced pistols are not classified as short-barreled rifles, and shouldering a pistol brace does not trigger NFA requirements. ATF has clarified that pistol braces are not subject to any ban or special regulation.
What does the ATF say about pistol braces?
ATF's 2023 rule classifying braced pistols as short-barreled rifles was vacated by federal courts. ATF is now proposing to rescind that rule. Enforcement remains unsettled due to ongoing litigation. Consult a firearms attorney for guidance on your specific situation and applicable laws.
What states don't allow pistol braces?
California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Washington restrict or ban pistol braces. Laws vary by state; some impose no restrictions beyond federal law. Check your state and local statutes before purchasing or traveling with a braced pistol.
Is a pistol brace better than a gun stock?
Neither is objectively better—it depends on your needs. Stocks offer superior shoulder control and stability. Braces provide compactness and easier transport across state lines without NFA registration. A fixed setup favors a stock; portability and multi-state travel favor a brace.
What is a SIG brace?
A pistol stabilizing brace is a cuff or support that attaches to a firearm's buffer tube, letting you secure the gun to your forearm for better control. Originally designed to help disabled shooters fire one-handed, braces became widely used on AR-style pistols and other compact firearms.
What can I legally put on my AR pistol?
AR pistol legality depends on barrel length and attachments. Barrels under 16 inches without a traditional stock are legal federally. Pistol braces are currently legal following court rulings that vacated ATF restrictions, though this could change. State laws vary significantly—check your jurisdiction before purchasing or modifying.
Can I have a pistol brace on a buffer tube?
Yes, pistol braces mount directly to buffer tubes. Most AR-15 pistols use a dedicated pistol buffer tube for this purpose. Slide the brace onto the tube and secure it. Verify your firearm's configuration complies with federal and state laws, as regulations vary by jurisdiction.
