Frequently Asked Questions
Hornady 45-70 Leverevolution Ammo for Sale
What is the most accurate 45-70 ammo?
Accuracy depends on your specific rifle and barrel. Hornady LEVERevolution and Barnes VOR-TX consistently rank among top performers. Heavier 300–325 grain loads often group tighter at distance. Testing multiple loads in your rifle remains the only reliable way to determine which performs best.
Is 45-70 too powerful for deer?
No. The 45-70 is well-suited for deer. Lighter 300-325 grain loads minimize meat damage while still delivering clean kills. The cartridge is also capable on elk and moose, making it a versatile choice rather than an excessive one for deer hunting.
Is a 45-70 a good elk rifle?
Yes. The 45-70 is fully capable on elk within reasonable hunting ranges, typically under 250 yards. Heavy bullets deliver reliable energy and penetration on large game. Lever-action rifles chambered in this cartridge remain popular for elk hunting. Shot placement matters most; practice with your specific rifle and load before the season.
What is the killing range of a 45-70?
Effective hunting range is typically 150–200 yards for most shooters, though skilled marksmen can stretch it to 300 yards with appropriate loads. The cartridge hits hard on big game within that window but suffers significant bullet drop beyond it, making longer shots challenging without precise range estimation.
How much does a 45-70 drop at 1000 yards?
At 1000 yards, a 45-70 drops roughly 450 to 600+ inches (37 to 50+ feet) depending on bullet weight, velocity, and load. The cartridge has an effective target-shooting range of 750 to 1000 yards, and Springfield historically rated it to 1000 yards. Shooters actively engage targets at that distance.
Does 45-70 kick harder than 30-06?
Recoil comparison between 45-70 and 30-06 depends heavily on load and rifle. With typical factory loads, recoil is similar, and some shooters find 30-06 sharper. Heavy 45-70 loads in light lever guns can be punishing. Neither caliber consistently out-recoils the other across all configurations.
What are the drawbacks of using a 45-70?
Significant recoil, especially with modern hot loads in lever-action rifles. Thin-walled brass limits pressure, so factory ammo runs mild compared to modern cartridges. Sticky extraction can occur. Effective hunting range stays under 200 yards for most shooters. Ammunition is expensive, typically around $45 per box.
