Frequently Asked Questions
Hornady 300 PRC Ammo for Sale
What is the ballistics of a Hornady 300 PRC?
Hornady 300 PRC loads typically achieve muzzle velocities between 2,720 and 2,960 fps depending on bullet weight. The popular 212-grain ELD-X load runs around 2,860 fps, with roughly 3,850 ft-lbs muzzle energy. The cartridge is known for excellent long-range performance and an extended supersonic range, though specific drop figures vary by conditions.
Is the 300 PRC a good hunting round?
Yes, the 300 PRC is an excellent hunting round. Hornady designed it for long-range precision using heavy-for-caliber bullets. It delivers flat trajectories, manageable recoil for its power, and good barrel life. Ammunition runs roughly $53 per box, with multiple loads available from major retailers.
What bullets for 300 PRC?
The 300 PRC is optimized for heavy, high-BC bullets. Popular choices include the 225gr Hornady ELD-M for long-range precision and 215gr Berger Hybrid for hunting. For deer, use 165–180gr; for elk and larger game, 185–225gr. Hornady, Berger, and Nosler all offer quality options.
Is Hornady Outfitter lead free?
Yes, Hornady Outfitter ammunition is lead-free. It uses monolithic bullets — either the CX or GMX depending on the load — designed for lead-restricted hunting areas while delivering reliable penetration and expansion. It is available in multiple calibers across various retailers.
Does 300 PRC kick hard?
300 PRC generates roughly 36 ft-lbs of recoil energy—noticeably more than a 308 Winchester and exceeding some popular magnums like the .300 Win. Mag. due to its larger powder capacity. Rifle weight, stock design, and muzzle brake choice all affect felt recoil. Most shooters find it manageable with a brake installed.
